Diary of a Maniac Designer by Yana Frank, Third Edition

Overview   Process

Task: to republish a book by Yana Frank.

The third edition of Diary of a Maniac Designer includes six new chapters and boasts a refreshed layout.

The dust jacket is decorated with new illustrations and a new typeface

The design commission always has three components: the task, the client and the fee. Ideally, the task is interesting and inspiring, the client is nice and pleasant and the pay is generous. In reality, for a designer to be happy only two of these components must be present.

It means that you can take up a tremendously exciting task for a very charming person even if they don’t have much money. Or you can make a heap of boring work for a nice client who pays handsomely. Or complete an interesting task for a total schmuck of a client for a very-very hefty pay.

And on the contrary: no pile of money will be you consolation if the task makes you feel down and the customer is disgusting. And so on.»
