In 1899 the first issue of what is today known under the simple name Ogoniok was printed in St. Petersburg as the supplement to the Birzheviye Vedomosti daily. In 2005 a website with the simple URL ogoniok.com was launched.

A great deal of effort was put into developing the navigation system: the page of every article features the contents of the block it belongs to, links to the article published in the previous issue and to the list of all similar publications. Also a user-friendly modular grid was developed to allow for placing a lot of conceptual blocks on a page.

The website will shortly include an archive of back issues, a library, a forum, and online conferences featuring celebrities.
