Here are two <div> objects with limited width. The first one has a single image, the second has an image and some text.

Internet Explorer 6 (or lower) displays the first image without any space underneath it.

Other browsers display the image above the bottom line only in standards mode. To the point, ‘almost standards’ mode was created for this very purpose—it follows all rules of the standards except the layout of images.
