The making of the Alumna typeface

Overview• Process

The type designer is getting inspired by the works of Hermann Zapf and makes the first approach with a slight Art Nouveau deviation.

Art director: Nope, Art Nouveau won’t work here, bring it closer to Zapf’s style.

Remaking.

Now we don’t like the details. Fixing.

Working on individual characters and choosing better designs.

The illustrator helps by drawing cats.

Looks cool but doesn’t exactly match the style of the face. With the help of the illustrator, the type designer changes the outlines.

Drawing alternative characters and other small things.

Time to work on kerning.
