§ 182. Mobile versions of websites two years later

December 1, 2015

Mobile versions of websites are no longer the stupidest thing in the world.

It’s not that they stopped being totally lame, but the general trend has changed—mobile devices are now more popular than computers. Today, most people don’t even think how a website looks on a computer screen, because they open it on their phones.

The key principle of user interface design hasn’t changed: the larger the screen, the better the interface. But for the next five years, while people will be learning to interact with information via tiny phone and tablet screens, quality won’t matter that much.

We’ll certainly see the comeback of good design and functionality, but a renaissance always comes after dark ages.
