Lev Tolstoy University was founded in 1938 and is located in a merchant mansion in the historic center of Tula. The studio developed a flexible visual identity which is simultaneously academically strict, youthfully spirited and rich in imagery important to the university.
One such image is the maple tree planted in 1941 by students of the institute before heading to the front. It has stood for over eighty years and became a symbol of the faculty for several generations of students.
In the new logo, the letter “T” and a maple leaf merge to form a portrait of Lev Tolstoy.
The text combines a modern grotesque typeface with a handwritten type named Tolstoy, created specifically for the project and inspired by the great writer’s handwriting. The past is thoughtfully woven into the present.
For business documentation, a restrained version of the logo “without the beard” is provided.
In other cases, all elements are used without restrictions.
